Dale Glover, car 66, in the white Vauxhall Nova, was second overall on the second day, and rally leader on the third - but came under intense pressure in the final sections and finally dropped to 21st.... "I'm not too disheartened" he said at the finish, last year's Lombard was my first ever rally, and I've only taken part in four other smaller events since so we were delighted to be worrying the front-runners.

22:11 - A Banham Miracle Cure
Banham/Inskip miracle cures are a regular feature for rally competitors on events where they act as mechanical rescue - They performed more miracles today. Among them - at least six cars were dragged out of Caerwent with broken suspension and/or drive shafts - after getting all these critically wounded cars back on the road Peter and Andy were soon at Chepstow Park to work their magic on the Corsa of Geoff Lobb & Chris Holliday who we reported earlier as retiring with a broken sump. The Corsa has now arrived at the Llandudno finish - "We had a good competitive run this afternoon" said Chris Holliday.

Both Sophie Robinson/Claire Mole (Volkswagen Polo) and Edward Robinson/Adrian Robinson (Peugeot 106 Rallye) have retired for unknown reasons. Ted Howles/Mike Gray (MG ZR) were off the road for a long time after Selectif 4.10 but have now regained the road. Iain Tullie/Carl Hawkins (Vauxhall Corsa) have broken in Legends Park. Adam Wiseberg/Peter Blackett (Renault Clio) lost all their oil after hitting a rock in the road - a disappointing end after running in the top ten for most of the event. Pat Tierney/Ed Scott (Peugeot 106 Rallye) are another to fall victim to the Activity Centre armco retiring with broken steering and drive shaft.

12:45 - Caerwent bites hard.
Caerwent lived up to its reputation this morning as many cars fell foul of the lethal combination of ice, cattle grids and the notorius kerbs. Among the casualties is Neil Wilson and Tony Davies (Ford Puma). Rob Ellis reported "It's carnage in here". Having survived Caerwent Ian and David Jones finish Chepstow Park in a cloud of steam with a blown heater hose and more seriously Geoff Lobb and Chris Holliday ended a good run as the oil drained from a cracked sump on their Corsa.

21:45 - Monaco with weeds
After Radnor, several more Selectifs awaited in the Forest of Dean area before cars took on the rigours of Caerwent at night, the military ground which has been described by someone with vivid imagination as "The Monaco Grand Prix course in weeds" is a tortuous and sinous layout of vicious kerbs and potted tarmac known not to take any prisoners if not treated with the utmost respect. Penalties here are expected and the leaderboard will for certain be changed by those who get Caerwent right. Many are likely to come unstuck. It's practice for a similar session in Caerwent first thing in the morning.

21:20 - Owen Turner suffers gearbox failure
Owen Turner, who has been a contender at the top of the leaderboard in his Metro, now leaves the Metro charge to his brother, as his gearbox has gone - he expects to take massive penalties tonight to fix it when others are in parc-ferme, in order to continue tomorrow but all hope of being up with the leaders vanished in Radnor Forest this afternoon as the car had to be nursed to the end of a punishing Selectif.

The talk among crews at the lunch halt on Leg 3 was of a great Selectif in Weston Park and very slippy conditions in Ceri forest. The ford at Bruntinthorpe produced moments for several crews but it was not the water that caused problems for Graham Parkinson & Andrew Duerden who became beached on bank after a slight misjudgement of the 90-left immediately before the ford. Unable to move they needed a good tug from a friendly Landrover to regain the road. They were lucky to loose only five minutes.

16:25 - Good crowds at Wollaton Park
Media interest and good crowds had to wait an extra half hour before the cars arrived after Friday afternoon traffic holdups. The quicker cars put on a good display in the dipping afternoon sunshine - how long can the good weather last? Reports have reached us that Stephen Cooper & James Hobden have lost all the gearbox oil from their VW Polo in Mockery Wood. It is not known at this time whether any reapirs can be made.

Car 44 reports - "Struggles up every hill, two fat blokes in a 1 litre car! Missed split in Silverstone 2 but got it right on the second run. Lost number plate in Bruntingthorpe ford, grest fun though."

11:10 - From a sunny but cold Silverstone
After an early morning Oxford start the leading cars have reached the Silverstone selectifs where the Turner brothers were seen having to overtake slower cars as the entry is not reseeded until the Chester restart tomorrow morning. The second Silverstone test brought another Polo drive shaft failure. This time for Robert Belcher and Robert Francis who had given their spare shaft to John Hall last night. Peter Banham has reached the sticken car and is busy making repairs.

21:00 - First cars return from prologue section
Happily the rain has stayed away and the prologue section is under way over a series of very slippery farm tracks around the Didcot area. First cars returning the Holiday Inn report a good evening run - "Much more fun than an evening in the bar" and there is still plenty of evening left altough early nights are on order ready for the 7:20am start and a long day on Friday.

16:50 - Lull before the storm
The evening prologue section is over a secret route not disclosed to competitors until 15 minutes before the first car leaves at 18:30 so there is now a lull while the crews wait for route details to be handed out.

16:30 - Clear skies but will it last.
After rain storms and dark clouds earlier this afternoon the skies have now cleared so the hope is for a dry run on this evenings prologue section. All the cars except for two late arrivals have now passed the technical scrutiny. The only notified non starter is the MGZR of Paul and Sandra Merryweather.

Thursday 14:10 - Relaxed mood before the start
There is a generally relaxed mood at the Kassam Stadium in Oxford this afternoon although a few crews are coping with the usual drop of pre-event dramas. David Winstanley (MGZR) and Felix Wright (Ford Focus) have fallen foul of the noise scrutineer so Peter Banham is already busy doing the KwikFit thing. Dave Smith & Pete Johnson (Vauxhall Astra) suffered an alternator failure on the way to Oxford but have now fitted a temporary replacement. More unfortunate is Nicky Porter who had a bump on the road this morning. The front of his usually immaculate car is now a little less than perfect but Tony Fowkes is busy making repairs. Nicky was honest enough to admit a momentary loss of concentration rather that look to blame any other factors.
